Small Feet, Big Kick

{July 21, 2011}   This Little Piggy Went…

Cass, or The Toddler Formerly Known As Piggy (at least in our house), has been refusing to eat for the past three days. Everything I’ve read says not to worry, but I can’t help it. Since I’ve been on summer vacation for the past two months, I have a lot of time to fill…and I’m filling it with worrying. He’s also getting his top molars – and possibly his lower canines, I’ve noticed – so another big part of my day is being frustrated. Frustrated that he’s crabby, a crabbiness which I’m sure is exacerbated by what has to be a very hungry tummy. I, on the other hand, am not starving myself – I am feeding on his crabbiness (as well as his high-chair leftovers) and becoming a mom who is very ready to go back to work. Maybe I’m not supposed to say this, but while I have enjoyed my summer with Cass – IMMENSELY – I need to be a grown-up again for a little while…or my version of it, anyway.

{May 20, 2011}   Belated Birthday Thanks

I meant to post last week about what a lovely birthday I had.

Props to my charming husband for delivering a sweet bouquet to me at work.  He’s such a keeper.

Thanks also to my coworkers for an amazing cake and a two-week pass to my new yoga place!

When I got home, there was another gorgeous bouquet waiting for me from my family in Texas.

And we finished strong with sushi at Kinja, which I’d been wanting to try for awhile.  It wasn’t the very best Japanese I’ve ever had, but the names of their rolls are certainly entertaining in a slightly pervy way – I had a hard time choosing between the Hot Night, Baby I Love You, or the Sex and the City.  In the end I went with the Play Girl ‘cause that’s how I roll (get it?  Bad, I know, but I couldn’t help myself).

I also wanted to thank everyone for the calls, cards and e-wishes.  Thanks for another great birthday!

{April 26, 2011}   Brix & Stone

With the hectic holiday weekend, I had no time to comment on our dinner at the new Haymarket gastro pub, Brix & Stone. Formerly a Mexican joint, the renovation on this place is très chic – dim lighting, cozy nooks, exposed brick walls and wooden beams across the ceiling. It has the potential to be hipster swank or casually romantic – we took Cass along, so we fell into neither of these categories but still enjoyed it immensely. The service was exceptionally attentive, probably helped by the fact that we got there early to avoid the Friday night crowds, and they have a nice beer selection with plenty of choices and bonus points for branching out of the Bud/Busch trap into which some places downtown have fallen (no doubt catering to the cash-strapped, taste bud-deficient college kids in the neighborhood). Dan had a draught of Guinness (excellently poured with a shamrock drawn in the head) and I sampled an old-fashioned style cream stout from our friends in the UK. Portions are huge (this is America, after all). We treated ourselves to a calamari appetizer, and followed up with thickly battered fish-&-chips (me) and hearty bangers-&-mash (Dan). Everything was yummy and there was more than enough for lunch the next day. I recommend it to my fellow Lincolnites or to anyone else visiting our corner of good ‘ole NE – and if you do try it, let me know what you think!

{April 20, 2011}   A Peek at the Week

It’s official: Cass has joined the world of the uprights!  Each day he gets more confident on his sturdy little legs, and his tottering/lurching gait is such a joy to watch.  He’ll really get to put his walking to the test this weekend at our neighborhood Easter egg hunt.  I only hope that he doesn’t get steamrolled by the other candy-crazed children…

And speaking of learning to balance – I took my first yoga class in two years at Yoga Body and Balance, which offers one free class each week.  I love this because I really want to get back into practicing regularly, but I really don’t want to drop the cash for a punch card right now.  However, the big 2-8 is fast approaching and my body is constantly reminding me that I won’t be able to skate by on a high metabolism forever…so a little exercise is in order.

I officially start with BryanLGH in the summer and just found out last week that I have to get a TB test before I can start, since I’ve been to like 20 countries with a super-high incidence of TB.  And because I need the test, I’ll need to find a doctor – something I’ve been putting off since I moved to Lincoln almost 2 ½ years ago.  Should be fun.  So, if you heart your MD and live in Lincoln, let me know who you use…

We also launched dates and details for the annual Fox Hole 100 Bicycle Ride and are really looking forward to another great event.  Please join us, if you can!

{April 20, 2011}   Setting Up Shop

Since the Fox Hole and Trailside Tandems are already set up on WordPress, I’m going to try it out as well…for efficiency’s sake.  Hopefully, the move will give me a gentle nudge to post more frequently, too.
